What is auto insurance?
Auto insurance exists to protect you from hefty financial losses due to unexpected accidents. Essentially, it is a contract between you and your insurance company. If you are involved in a car accident (or experience another hazard involving your vehicle), having auto insurance will assist you greatly, as your insurance company will step in and cover some of or all of the losses resulting from your damaged vehicle, injuries and related losses.
What do auto policies cover?
Every car owner must buy certain basic coverages in order to register a motor vehicle in Michigan.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): If you are hurt in an automobile accident, this part of your no-fault policy will pay all reasonably necessary medical expenses with no maximum limit. It will also pay, up to a maximum amount, for the wages you would have earned if you had not been hurt, for up to three years. Visit www.michigan.gov/DIFS for current wage loss amounts. If you are killed in an accident, your policy will pay your spouse and dependents up to the monthly amount for three years, based on what they would have received from your earnings and fringe benefits.
Property Protection Insurance (PPI): Your policy will pay up to $1 million for damage your car does in Michigan to other people’s property, such as buildings and fences. This coverage will also pay for damage your car does to other people’s properly parked vehicles.
Residual Liability Insurance — Bodily Injury and Property Damage (BI/PD): The no-fault law protects insured persons from being sued as the result of an automobile accident, except in certain special situations. The minimum required BI/PD coverage limits are:
Up to $20,000 for a person who is hurt or killed in an accident.
Up to $40,000 for each accident if several people are hurt or killed.
Up to $10,000 for property damage in another state.
The perks included within the policy you choose are generally up to you, but auto policies can offer expansive benefits such as:
-
Collision Insurance: Covers damage to your own vehicle after a wreck.
-
Comprehensive Insurance: Pays for damage from non-accident mishaps, like weather damage.
-
Medical Coverage: Pays for your medical bills and those of your passengers.
-
Uninsured/underinsured Insurance: Insures you against damage caused by someone else who doesn’t have appropriate liability coverage.
Other coverage offers help for roadside assistance and rental car coverage.
Contact your agent about including these protections in your coverage.
Why do you need car insurance?
In most cases, you are required to have some type of coverage. It is important to not settle for the bare minimum, though, as it could hurt you in the future if something were to happen. Adequate coverage is essential for financial protection if an accident happens. Ensure you’re properly covered with the right plan. Talk to your agent about the most comprehensive and affordable policy for yourself.
